‘All those little things – make sure you do them’: Guruzeta’s journey from injury table to goals with the Basque club

Thehe initial occasion the Spanish forward featured in England, an young playing for the youth squad against German opponents at Wycombe’s stadium in the 2015 season, he found the net. During his subsequent match he appeared in British turf, against the Black Cats two months later, he netted. The third time, against Pep Guardiola’s team not long later, sure enough, he scored again. As he revisited to the city to play against the Red Devils at the sports complex in 2017, he found the back of the net. A spectacular strike, as well. “Actually,” he says, “it’s one of the best goals I’ve ever scored.” So Athletic did what was necessary: he was replaced.

“I was furious,” the Athletic striker reveals, before breaking into laughter. “Probably there’s a recording. Our match against United and I performed well. They didn’t let me play the final 45 minutes: I was without a signed my contract, goals were flowing, there were lots of rumours, it’s typical. I’m unsure regarding interest from Newcastle, but I remember reading about the Red Devils, standard transfer gossip. It’s unclear how true it was, but even if they had called, my desire was to remain at Athletic. I’m fortunate to be here.”

Real Sociedad release pressure with surreal victory in Basque derby like no other

At the facility, the Basque Country, the day’s first practice is ready to commence; post-session, the quick travel to the airport and a further journey to Britain, on this occasion to face Newcastle in the European elite competition on the upcoming match. Just saying those two words lights him up. It’s turning out to be a tough year for the club, partly because of the demands of being here. Defeated late on in the weekend clash, they have won only one of their recent league fixtures and been defeated by Arsenal and the German side in European competition. Yet, look at the overall situation, the memorable evenings and upcoming events, and there’s a kind of quiet appreciation within him.

In the the period since he had rejoined the team, Gorka has been a final four contender in Europe, denied at the last hurdle a domestic final by Manchester United, and has ridden an historic vessel through the waterway flanked by countless supporters after winning the Copa del Rey, the club’s first trophy in four decades. Currently he stands as the top goal-getter in the UCL, where they are distinctive and returning after absence in a long period. “This was beyond my dreams,” he states.

He considered it difficult enough just to break into the senior squad and he was right. Born to the ex-La Real star the former professional and a regular attendee at the team he now opposes, the forward is from the Antiguoko academy, the San Sebastián club that developed the Arsenal manager, the legendary midfielder and the Bournemouth manager. He joined Athletic at his teens but after his top-level debut in the 2018 season, he went through a serious knee problem, being released, a relegation and a call back before he could earn his place, making his comeback to live the best days of his career.

Gorka Guruzeta in training
Gorka Guruzeta aims to take on Newcastle in the Champions League.

“Entering the youth system not expecting to reach the senior squad but every phase you advance through you’re remaining and you can see it getting closer. You arrive and then … you’re sent away.” He played six, nine, five, one, four and 20 minutes in six games between his bow and early 2019. “And then I go back down to the filial [Bilbao Athletic, the Under-23s]. A few matches with them and I tear my cruciate.

“A severe disappointment but In retrospect as a beneficial experience because it forced me to alter the way I saw things. The rehabilitation process is difficult, but it aids growth. You adopt practices you didn’t have. Previously I was casual, but I did the sessions and then return home, as a youngster does. In the facility, facilities are comprehensive, so utilize it all. Practice, prevention. Strength training. Should your hips be uneven, work on that. Assuming ankle mobility is good, make it a 12 or a 14. Every small aspect: perform them.

“In the first team you’re going to face physical challenges who have crashed into players countless occasions. They’re so strong. I look at photos of me before: I had slender legs. Thus incidents occur. Look at pictures of me now and it’s totally different. The setback taught me. Training finishes, but additional work remains. Peers are prepared, really ready; you have to be too.”

Minutes are crucial. He left emotionally in the pandemic season, at 23 years old, joining the second tier. During his Sabadell spell in that season, he got three strikes in 40 games. During his Amorebieta stint in the latter part of the season, the scoring picked up. “Players go through it: temporary moves, ended deals. With a turnaround, work, believe, and if one day they need someone for your role, recall is possible. Preparation is key. When they decided to call again, it was a dream come true. The trophy success, play in Europe, and qualify for Europe’s top tier … pfff.”

Little surprise he states appreciate the experience. Especially after the prior campaign which, on occasions, was focused on persistence. After being leading scorer with a high tally, last season he got seven in {15 games more|additional matches|
