Micky van de Ven scored on two occasions as Spurs extended their winning streak in away games in the top division and delivered Everton their first defeat at their new home.

Everton were unbeaten in their last five matches at their new ground at the dockside location, having departed Goodison Park behind after more than a century at the end of last season.

But Spurs captain Van de Ven struck on two occasions from corners in the first half to put their impressive record at risk, and they were unable to turn it around before the midfielder - set up by ex-Everton forward the Brazilian - nodded in a third to put the game to bed.

The Everton defender believed he had equalized the scores five minutes after Van de Ven's opener, glancing a powerful header past Guglielmo Vicario from an set-piece.

The Portuguese striker, in the meantime, failed to convert a handful of opportunities, while Vicario made a series of excellent stops to ensure Tottenham went five matches on the road unbeaten in the English top flight.

But the VAR stepped in, instructing Craig Pawson to review the score on the screen and the official ruled that Jack Grealish and the attacker were in offside positions and had interfered with the Spurs keeper.

This victory moves Thomas Frank's team up to third in the division, five points off north London rivals and table-toppers the Gunners.

The Merseyside club remain in 14th position and are six points ahead of the drop zone.

Spurs breakdown: The defender excels in duties at both ends of the field

After a drab midweek display in the Champions League against the French side, where they mustered a only two shots on goal, the manager chose Randal Kolo Muani in attack instead of former Toffees player the Brazilian.

The summer signing was failed to influence the game before being substituted for the substitute after 60 minutes on the pitch, but it turns out he wasn't needed in the final outcome.

Toffees breakdown: Everton missing finishing touch

Everton's new home had been a fortress, but it seems the freshness may have faded slightly and supporters flocked to the gates after the midfielder's final goal for Tottenham.

The break in Everton's winning streak at home will not be a massive worry for the manager, but their striker situation are.

Beto and the other striker - the Everton's pair of recognised strikers - had netted only a single goal combined before the weekend's match.

And they were unable to contribute to that poor tally on a wet and gloomy night on Merseyside.

The striker's performance was summed up when he opted to bicycle-kick a clear chance from near the goal, even with having room and time to reposition for a simpler shot that would have challenged the keeper.

Barry, as well, failed to make an impact after coming on for the starter in the 65th minute.

It was not for a lack of opportunity. Most of the home side's offensive moves came through the winger and the forward, who tirelessly whipped threatening crosses into the Tottenham box.
