Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to question particular calls made by the official, mirroring the practice already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the 147-year role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review other situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and ruled the player was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
